Strike a pose

Jeff Oliver Photography gives tips on posing while still looking natural…

We all want amazing wedding photos – we’ve seen the photos in magazines where the couple look so effortlessly glamorous. Well you can do that too!

At Jeff Oliver Photography we like to give our couples tips on posing naturally so you will look great in your photos without having to think about it. We’d like to share a few of our top tips on comfortable, confident posing.

First, there are a few things you need to know about photography. If you remember nothing else, these tips will help you…

Whatever is closest to the camera will always appear bigger. By that we mean if you’re sitting down with your legs sticking out in front of you, then your feet will be closest to the camera and will look much bigger and out of proportion than they actually are.
This isn’t necessarily a bad thing as we can use this to our advantage, and we can use this to accentuate our best features and to hide our less favorable ones.

Imagine yourselves standing in front of a camera (you can practice this in the mirror to see the results for yourself). First of all stand facing directly face on to camera, you will see you have presented your widest view to the camera. This pose we recommend for men, as it’s a good thing to look strong and powerful, but most women will want to slim themselves down.
So for women, turn your whole body, (including your feet), 45 degrees so you are now on an angle to the mirror (looking better already eh). Take the weight off of your leg closest to the mirror, so you are just resting the ball of your foot on the floor. Now push out your hip on the side furthest away from the mirror/camera, this creates beautiful curves (and now your hip and bottom are furthest away from the camera, so you guessed it, they look smaller)!

You now need something to do with you hands right?

Try this first of all: put your arms straight down by your sides and have a look in the mirror. You’ve just added two arms width to your body – not good. Instead, put your hands on your hips and bend your elbows out. By doing this you have just created space between your body and arms which does two things, it slims you down and accentuates your shape.

Straight away you now have a way to stand (because you’re not posing) that will look really flattering and show off your figure in any photo!

Another great tip for someone that doesn’t feel 100% comfortable in front of the camera, is to lean on something. This could be a doorway, wall, or tree. The reason we say this, is if you are standing upright in the middle of a space its easy to feel uncomfortable and not be sure what to do. The instant you lean against something it allows you to take on a more relaxed pose. And the more relaxed you are the better your wedding photos will be.

You don’t need to use all these tips at once, but if you put a few of them into action you’ll soon be pulling off amazing looking poses that give you great shape and confidence, and that means amazing photos!

A great way to practice your posing and see what it looks like in photos before your wedding day is to have a pre wedding shoot. It’s really good to help you feel more relaxed in front of the camera and gives you a better idea of what to expect on your wedding day.
